ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has urged Nigerian scientists to provide fact-based guidance on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and strengthen public confidence in biotechnology.
Speaking at a two-day workshop organised by OFAB Nigeria under the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mrs. Esuabana Nko-Asanye, said credible, evidence-driven communication was vital.
“We must ensure our knowledge base is accurate and up to date,” she said. “Nigerians depend on us for clear, factual explanations about GMOs.”
Nko-Asanye noted that while innovation is key to food security, GMO adoption must follow strict regulatory compliance.
NBRDA Director-General, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha stressed transparency and openness in biotechnology communication. “To earn trust, we must be honest about both potential and concerns,” he said.
He added that publishing safety assessments and field trial data would build accountability and public understanding.
NBMA Director-General, Mr Bello Bwari reassured Nigerians that GMOs undergo rigorous safety checks before approval.
The workshop, themed “Biotechnology and Biosafety: Building Trust through Science and Facts,” brought together scientists and policymakers to promote accurate, evidence-led GMO communication.
