ABUJA, Nigeria – The Provost of Oasis College of Nursing Sciences, Mary Oritimehin has calls for improved pay and working conditions to stem the growing exodus of Nigerian nurses abroad.
Oritimehin, warns that poor remuneration is driving skilled professionals out of the country.
“It doesn’t make sense to train nurses and lose them to other countries,” she says during the matriculation of 113 students in Abuja.
Oritimehin notes Nigerian nurses are highly valued globally due to rigorous training but face unfavourable conditions at home.
She urges government reforms to improve welfare, working environments, and career incentives to retain talent.
The provost highlights staff shortages, revealing instances where two nurses attend to over 40 patients, raising concerns over mental health and service quality.
Registrar Chukwudi Odoh says the institution is committed to strengthening healthcare manpower.
A student, Michael Amarachi, expresses passion for the profession, citing a desire to improve healthcare delivery.
Experts warn continued brain drain could weaken Nigeria’s already strained health system.
