BORNO, Nigeria – Nigeria’s military faces a dangerous shift in insurgent tactics as groups like ISWAP and Boko Haram deploy weaponised commercial drones in attacks.
Defence intelligence reveals that militants are modifying off-the-shelf drones into explosive devices capable of precision strikes on military and civilian targets.
“These modifications are not random; there are external inputs and sponsors,” a military source says.
The discovery follows a major operation in Malam Fatori, where troops kill senior insurgent commanders and recover manuals, devices, and intelligence materials described as a “treasure trove.”
Analysts warn that drone warfare could significantly escalate the conflict across the Lake Chad Basin, mirroring tactics seen in other global conflict zones.
In response, the military deploys electronic jamming systems and enhances troop training to detect and neutralise aerial threats.
Security experts urge stronger efforts to disrupt supply chains and funding networks enabling the acquisition of such technology.
