LAGOS, Nigeria – Nigeria records a medical milestone as doctors perform the first robotic gynaecological surgery in West Africa, marking a leap in advanced healthcare delivery.
The procedure takes place at The Prostate Clinic, Lagos, where a 30-year-old woman undergoes robotic-assisted surgery to remove ovarian tumours without open surgery.
Consultant Robotic Surgeon Prof Kingsley Ekwueme calls the moment historic.
“We introduced the first surgical robot in the sub-region last year. Today, we extend that innovation to women’s care,” he says.
The patient, who suffers months of pain, leaves the hospital the same day.
“With robotic surgery, recovery is faster, blood loss is minimal, and vital organs are preserved,” Ekwueme explains, adding that the surgery is offered free under the clinic’s corporate social responsibility.
Consultant Gynaecologist Prof Yusuf Oshodi of LASUTH confirms the tumour is benign and fertility preserved.
“The precision allows us to remove only affected tissue,” he says.
Medical experts say the success could position Nigeria as a hub for advanced surgery in Africa.
