Foreign Affairs Minister, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu
LAGOS, Nigeria – The Federal Government has begun voluntary evacuation of Nigerians from South Africa as rising anti-immigrant tensions trigger safety concerns and diplomatic urgency.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu on Monday confirms that about 130 Nigerians have registered for repatriation flights amid escalating protests targeting foreigners.
She says the directive follows presidential orders prioritising citizen safety. “The President has reiterated that the safety of Nigerians remains the top priority,” she states.
Diplomatic missions are engaging South African authorities, including the summoning of the Acting High Commissioner, as Nigeria demands accountability over reported deaths involving its citizens.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu describes the incidents as “utterly condemnable,” adding that Nigeria is monitoring investigations closely and insisting on justice.
While recent protests have largely remained peaceful, officials warn of renewed demonstrations and heightened anxiety among Nigerians living in affected areas.
