ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria and the European Union have announced plans to convene a high-level summit aimed at strengthening local pharmaceutical production and improving distribution systems across the country.
According to a statement released on Tuesday, the forum is being organised in collaboration with the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain and the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD).
The event seeks to attract targeted investments, reinforce regulatory capacity, and expand Nigeria’s health manufacturing ecosystem.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, described the summit as pivotal for advancing health security.
“This forum brings together government, industry, research, and investors to turn ambition into action for health sovereignty and local production,” he said.
He explained that Team Europe, through the Global Gateway, is backing innovation and partnerships designed to shift Africa from dependency on imported medicines to domestic production.
NIPRD Director-General, Dr Obi Adigwe, said the summit demonstrates Nigeria’s readiness to lead Africa’s pharmaceutical transformation.
“It will connect policy, innovation, and investment, highlighting NIPRD’s role in driving evidence-based research for local drug manufacturing,” he noted.
Presidential Initiative Coordinator, Dr Abdul Mukhtar, said the partnership marks a defining moment for economic restructuring.
“We are creating conditions for large-scale private investment and unlocking the economic potential of the health sector,” he stated.
