FG Moves to Modernise Agriculture Curriculum, Address Skills Gap Nationwide

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government launches a comprehensive review of agricultural curricula in technical institutions to address skills gaps and boost youth participation.
Chairman of the review committee Idris Bugaje says many programmes remain outdated and disconnected from modern farming practices.
“Some curricula have not been updated for over 15 years,” he states.
The initiative, led by the National Board for Technical Education, targets National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes.
Authorities say the reform will prioritise practical, industry-driven training.
“Agriculture remains central to Nigeria’s economy, but student interest is declining,” Bugaje adds.
The review introduces thematic groups covering crops, livestock, fisheries and forestry.
Angela Ajala of the National Commission for Colleges of Education emphasises the need for hands-on learning.
“If Nigeria is to secure its agricultural future, training must focus on practical skills,” she says.
Experts believe the reform could attract young Nigerians into agriculture and strengthen food security.
