ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved N100 billion for the rehabilitation and modernisation of police and paramilitary training institutions across Nigeria, many of which officials say have deteriorated to unacceptable levels.
The approval was issued during the 154th NEC meeting held virtually on Wednesday and chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima. The decision now awaits President Bola Tinubu’s final endorsement.
Presenting findings of the NEC Ad-hoc Committee on Security Training Institutions, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah said most facilities assessed were “deplorable and unfit” for proper training, warning that national security readiness cannot improve without upgrading these institutions.
Responding to the briefing, Vice President Shettima said the administration would prioritise rebuilding the centres to strengthen national security capacity.
“We are not here to admire problems but to solve them,” Shettima said. “Our task is not to explain challenges but to overcome them—and not to hope for progress but to engineer it.”
The rehabilitation project will cover police colleges, paramilitary academies and other federal training centres.
