ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s anti-narcotics agency has intercepted multiple drug shipments ingeniously concealed in frozen snails, giant light bulbs, and women’s clothing bound for the United States, United Kingdom, and Congo.
NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, said on Sunday that operatives at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and a courier firm made the discoveries, leading to several arrests.
A cargo agent, Boladale Riliwan, was caught on 7 October with 15 parcels of skunk hidden inside oversized bulbs headed for the DRC. Five days later, 48-year-old UK-based health worker, Olawale Oyebola Hakeemot, was arrested with 2,300 Tramadol pills concealed in frozen snails while attempting to board a Qatar Airways flight to Manchester.
In another case, officers foiled an attempt to ship 810 bromazepam tablets hidden in women’s apparel to the US.
Further raids across states led to the arrest of traffickers and the destruction of over 70 tonnes of cannabis farms in Ekiti and Ondo forests. In Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos, NDLEA seized large quantities of cannabis and codeine-based syrup imported from India.
Commending the operations, NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), praised officers for their vigilance. “Our personnel must sustain the fight through enforcement and continuous public education,” he said.
