LAGOS, Nigeria – A National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officer dies following a violent confrontation during a raid on a notorious drug enclave in Rivers State, highlighting escalating risks faced by frontline operatives.
NDLEA on Tuesday confirms that Chief Narcotic Agent Sadiq Bako Mujahid sustains fatal head injuries when operatives storm Ama Hausa, a long-identified drug hub on Bonny Island. Six suspects are arrested and illicit drugs, including cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, skunk and tramadol, are recovered.
According to the agency, the operation turns deadly after the alleged gang leader mobilises armed accomplices to resist arrest.
NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier-General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd), describes the attack as a direct assault on the Nigerian state.
“Any attack on our officers is an attack on the nation itself, and it will not go unanswered,” he says.
Despite the loss, Mr. Marwa commends the operatives for completing the mission under fire.
“Their courage ensured the suspects were arrested and the drugs seized. His sacrifice will not be in vain.”
Security analysts warn that increasing violence against anti-drug agents reflects the growing sophistication of criminal networks in coastal regions.
