ABUJA, Nigeria – The North Central Development Commission condemns the abduction of students travelling to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in Benue State, calling for urgent rescue efforts.
The incident, which occurs in Otukpo on Friday, triggers outrage over rising insecurity affecting students and education access in the region.
Managing Director of the commission, Cyril Tsenyi, describes the attack as a direct threat to human capital development and regional stability.
“This heinous act is not only an attack on innocent young Nigerians… but a setback to collective efforts aimed at advancing learning,” he says.
Tsenyi urges security agencies to intensify operations to secure the students’ safe and unconditional release, while ensuring perpetrators are apprehended swiftly.
He also calls for tighter security around examination centres and major transit routes used by candidates nationwide.
The commission warns that persistent insecurity could undermine educational progress and discourage school participation across affected communities.
Tsenyi extends sympathy to the families of the victims and the government of Benue State, reaffirming the commission’s commitment to peace-building and development initiatives.
“We remain committed to supporting security and sustainable development programmes that allow education to thrive without fear,” he adds.
