NASARAWA, Nigeria – Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule announces that the state fully funds the world’s first University of Public Relations and Leadership from government savings, marking a rare fiscal milestone in Nigeria’s sub-national governance.
Governor Sule made the disclosure on Friday during the ceremony of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) University in Gudi, Akwanga Local Government Area.
He says the project proceeds without loans or bonds, relying entirely on a special savings fund built over several years.
“This used to be a state where we borrowed N5 billion to build a market,” Sule says. “Today, if we have a N40 billion project, we don’t borrow. We execute.”
Sule explains that the savings were originally set aside for a future administration but were later deployed following persuasion from the State Executive Council. He confirms that 50 per cent of the contract sum has already been paid upfront.
NIPR President, Dr Ike Neliaku hails the project as transformative. “You are sending a powerful message to the world that Nasarawa State has become a centre of history,” he says.
Project consultant Arc. Shehu Tukur confirms that construction begins on a 100-hectare site, with the first phase covering essential academic and residential infrastructure.
