ABUJA, Nigeria – NAFDAC issues a nationwide warning over the growing circulation of banned food products smuggled into Nigeria, describing the trend as a major public health threat.
In a statement on Saturday, the agency identifies pasta, noodles, sugar and tomato paste as products increasingly found in markets despite being listed on the Federal Government’s Customs Prohibition List.
“The influx of these products undermines Nigeria’s food safety system and exposes consumers to unchecked health risks,” NAFDAC says.
The agency directs importers, traders and supermarket operators to immediately halt importation, sale and distribution of prohibited items.
Failure to comply, it warns, will result in seizures, destruction of goods, licence suspension and prosecution.
Director-General Prof Mojisola Adeyeye calls for stronger inter-agency collaboration, urging Customs, NPA, SON and other regulators to intensify enforcement at ports and borders.
NAFDAC says it remains committed to safeguarding public health through strict surveillance and enforcement nationwide.
