ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut two Chinese supermarkets and eight cosmetics shops in Abuja for selling unregistered and harmful products.
The supermarkets, located in Jabi, were caught distributing food products labelled only in Chinese, while cosmetics traders in Wuse Market stocked banned, expired, and counterfeit items, including aphrodisiacs and skin-whitening products.
“Some of these traders disguise themselves as dermatologists and pharmacists, prescribing dangerous products,” said Adegboyega Osiyemi, Deputy Director of Public Relations.
Confiscated products worth more than ₦170 million included Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, Curvy Weight Gain supplements, and unapproved skin-bleaching items.
NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye warned that such products pose “life-threatening risks to consumers.” She emphasised that the agency would enforce strict sanctions to protect public health.
“We welcome genuine trade partnerships, but Nigeria’s health cannot be compromised,” she said.
The agency urged Nigerians to purchase only NAFDAC-approved products and to report suspicious shops nationwide.
