NIGER, Nigeria – Nigeria’s drug and food regulator seals 18 warehouses in Bida, Niger State, after uncovering expired food and beverage products valued at over ₦100 million, authorities say.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control launches the enforcement operation following intelligence reports that expired goods are being repackaged for resale to consumers.
Inspectors from NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate raided facilities along Ndazabo White House, Minna Road, and behind Bida Modern Market, discovering tens of thousands of expired items.
According to NAFDAC, the seizure includes 80,000 packs of expired non-alcoholic drinks, 5,000 dairy milk sachets, 16,000 bottles of water, 28 cartons of pasta, and other compromised food products.
“These products pose serious public health risks and were already prepared for distribution,” the agency says in a statement signed by media consultant Sayo Akintola.
Investigators trace the warehouses to a company identified as BY Ventures, prompting further inspections of its supermarkets in Minna. Officials say additional expired goods and suspected counterfeit Goya cooking oil are found, leading to the sealing of both outlets.
NAFDAC confirms that the company’s Managing Director, Alhaji Yusuf Nadabo, admits ownership of the expired products during interrogation, while warehouse managers are arrested.
“Appropriate regulatory sanctions will be imposed, and the outcome will serve as a deterrent,” the agency says.
NAFDAC warns distributors nationwide that expired food trafficking will not be tolerated, stressing its commitment to consumer safety and stricter enforcement across markets.
