ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has cleared BON Bread producers of wrongdoing after investigating viral claims that one of the company’s loaves remained fresh for more than two months without developing mold.
The investigation followed a social media complaint posted on April 13, 2026, alleging that a loaf of bread supplied for sale failed to spoil after several weeks.
Although the complainant did not initially identify the brand, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited later confirmed the product involved was BON Bread and denied any safety violation.
In a statement issued on Sunday, NAFDAC Director-General Christianah M. Adeyeye said the agency launched a detailed investigation to establish “evidence-based scientific proof” regarding the allegation.
According to the statement, officials from NAFDAC’s Greater FCT Directorate inspected the company’s bakery facility in Abuja on April 20, 2026.
The agency said investigators collected bread samples and baking ingredients directly from the factory while additional samples were purchased from open markets for laboratory testing.
Adeyeye disclosed that laboratory analysis confirmed the use of calcium propionate as a preservative but stated that the quantity used complied with internationally accepted food safety standards.
“The amount of the preservative used was within the limits specified in Codex Alimentarius,” she said.
She further explained that the analysed samples contained no harmful or prohibited substances, including bromate and non-nutritive sweeteners.
NAFDAC noted that bread manufacturers are permitted to adopt shelf-life extension methods provided they comply with approved international food safety regulations.
The agency also urged Nigerians to report food safety complaints directly through NAFDAC offices, digital platforms and its recently launched call centre rather than relying solely on social media allegations.
According to the regulator, direct reporting allows complaints to be discreetly and thoroughly investigated.
