MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) launches an investigation into alleged civilian casualties following airstrikes near Jilli Market in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State.
In a statement, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame says the force treats reports of civilian harm “with utmost seriousness and empathy.”
The Chief of Air Staff orders the activation of the Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation Cell to conduct an immediate fact-finding mission.
“We remain committed to professionalism, accountability and transparency,” Ejodame says.
The airstrikes, described as follow-on operations, target suspected Boko Haram fighters believed to be regrouping in the area.
However, local sources report casualties among civilians at the busy market, with injured victims receiving treatment at Geidam Specialist Hospital.
Witnesses say the facility’s emergency unit is overstretched as more victims arrive.
Security analysts highlight the difficulty of precision targeting in densely populated areas, raising concerns over civilian protection.
The investigation aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident as public scrutiny intensifies.
