Former Attorney-General, Abubakar Malami
ABUJA, Nigeria – Former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, SAN, firmly denies allegations linking him to terrorism financing, describing the claims as baseless, misleading and politically motivated.
In a statement issued Friday, Malami responds to a publication alleging he held “links” to individuals described as terror suspects or financiers. He says no authority has ever investigated or accused him of such offences.
“I have never been invited, interrogated or charged by any security or intelligence agency—inside or outside Nigeria—in respect of terrorism financing,” Malami states.
He adds that the retired military officer cited in the report explicitly says he did not accuse Malami or others of funding terrorism but only mentioned unspecified professional relationships.
“That important clarification is overshadowed by a misleading headline,” Malami says, accusing political opponents of exploiting the framing to damage his reputation.
Terrorism financing, he stresses, is a grave crime and allegations must rest on verifiable facts. “Guilt by association is mischievous and unjust,” he adds.
Malami also defends his record in office, noting that he strengthened Nigeria’s legal framework against money laundering and terrorism financing during his tenure. “To suggest lawful institutional engagements, amount to terrorism financing contradicts both facts and due process,” he says.
