LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) reiterates its ban on night-time travel across inland waterways, warning concertgoers heading to Ilashe Beach to comply strictly with safety regulations ahead of a major musical event.
The advisory comes as popular Fuji musician, Alhaji Sule Alao Malaika, stages a concert at the waterfront destination on Sunday, January 11, 2026, an event expected to draw thousands of revellers.
LASWA’s General Manager, Damilola Emmanuel, says all water transportation must end before sunset, stressing that the restriction remains non-negotiable for both commercial and private boat operators. “LASWA urgently reminds the general public, especially fans of Alhaji Sule Alao Malaika, that night-time travel on Lagos inland waterways remains strictly prohibited,” Emmanuel says.
She explains that the ban is rooted in safety concerns, including reduced visibility, navigational hazards and the heightened risk of accidents after dark. “Night voyages pose significant danger to lives and property. These measures exist solely to protect waterway users,” she adds.
LASWA advises event attendees to plan their journeys carefully, arrive early and avoid returning by water after sunset. The authority also directs boat operators to operate strictly within approved hours and enforce safety standards.
“All passengers must wear life jackets at all times, and operators who flout the rules will face sanctions,” the statement reads.
Emmanuel confirms that LASWA will intensify patrols in collaboration with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and security agencies to ensure full compliance. “Surveillance will be heightened, and offenders will face legal consequences,” she warns.
The authority urges residents to prioritise safety over convenience, noting that adherence to waterway regulations remains critical as Lagos continues to promote safe inland water transport.
