LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority renews its warning against driving against traffic after a firefighter dies in a collision caused by a one-way motorcyclist at the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo.
The incident occurred on Wednesday along the service lane inward Abule-Ado.
In a statement, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki says preliminary findings show that a commercial motorcyclist “riding against the approved direction of traffic at excessive speed collided with the firefighter as he attempted to cross the expressway.” The impact created confusion, causing an approaching Shacman truck (JJJ 919 YK) loaded with sand to fail to brake in time.
Officers stationed nearby quickly cordoned off the scene to protect other commuters and alerted the Onireke Police Division, which deployed additional support. Bakare-Oki confirms that the rider fled with his motorcycle, while the truck driver abandoned the vehicle after realising the severity of the crash.
Federal Fire Service colleagues later evacuated the fallen firefighter using an official ambulance from the Trade Fair Complex. LASTMA has handed the impounded truck to security personnel for investigation and prosecution.
Bakare-Oki expresses condolences to the firefighter’s family, assuring them of LASTMA’s support. He warns that the increasing trend of motorists and riders driving against traffic continues to cause avoidable deaths across Lagos. “Compliance with directional signs is a critical civic duty to protect lives,” he says.
He reiterates LASTMA’s commitment to strict enforcement, road safety and a more disciplined motoring culture across the state.
