LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says it recorded zero fatalities while responding to 18 major emergency incidents across Lagos between June 14 and June 21.
The incidents included road crashes, fires, tanker accidents, container collapses and infrastructure failures in several parts of the state, including Maryland, Obanikoro, Mushin, Marina, Okota, Otedola and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the agency said the successful management of the incidents reinforced its position as a leading emergency response institution.
“LASEMA has reaffirmed its position as West Africa’s benchmark for urban emergency coordination following the successful management of 18 high-risk incidents across the state,” the agency said.
According to the statement, 17 incidents recorded no casualties, while a victim trapped in a container accident at Maryland Roundabout was rescued alive.
“One victim trapped in a 40-ft container accident at Maryland Roundabout on June 18 was extricated alive, stabilised by LRU paramedics and transferred to Gbagada Orthopaedic Hospital for advanced care.”
The agency also said emergency responders successfully contained a fire outbreak at COPACI Nigeria Limited in Okota before it spread to neighbouring warehouses.
Another fire involving a Mercedes-Benz vehicle at the premises of Polaris Bank in Marina was extinguished through coordinated efforts involving multiple emergency agencies.
LASEMA said its Cobra, Eagle, Sharks and Lagos Response Team units worked with the police, Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos Fire Service, LASAMBUS, NEMA and community stakeholders.
Permanent Secretary Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu attributed the outcome to sustained investment in emergency response systems.
“The consistency of zero-fatality outcomes across high-risk incidents in one week is not accidental. It is the product of deliberate investment in standards, training and equipment under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda,” he said.
