Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu
LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a ₦50,000 relief payment for workers in May, in a move aimed at cushioning the impact of rising inflation and economic pressure.
The announcement was made on Friday during the 2026 Workers’ Day event at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, where the governor was represented by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat.
“For this May, there will be an additional ₦50,000 for every worker in Lagos State,” he said, adding that the intervention could be reviewed in subsequent months.
The governor acknowledged the strain caused by global economic disruptions and rising living costs, stressing that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to support the workforce.
He also reaffirmed investments in infrastructure, housing, pensions and security, linking productivity to a safe and stable environment.
“Lagos is great because of you,” he said, praising workers across sectors for their contributions.
The relief package comes as many Nigerian workers grapple with inflation, wage stagnation and declining purchasing power, intensifying calls for sustained government intervention.
