LAGOS, Nigeria – Authorities in Orile-Agege warn residents against dumping waste in gutters, citing rising flood risks as the rainy season approaches.
Council Chairman Akinola Idowu says indiscriminate waste disposal poses serious threats to public health and drainage infrastructure. The warning came on Tuesday as Lagos prepares for seasonal rains known to trigger flooding in densely populated areas.
“Residents must treat environmental cleanliness as a personal responsibility,” Idowu states, adding that enforcement measures will accompany ongoing awareness campaigns.
The council warns offenders will face sanctions, signalling a stricter approach to environmental compliance.
Officials also plan to strengthen collaboration with state and federal agencies to enforce sanitation laws effectively.
The move reflects broader concerns about waste management in Lagos, where blocked drainage systems frequently worsen flooding during heavy rainfall.
Authorities say sustained public cooperation will be critical to preventing avoidable environmental hazards.
