LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government cautions Nollywood actress Sarah Martins against cooking and distributing food on public roads, saying the activity violates environmental and public order regulations.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab issued the warning on Saturday after authorities observed the actress preparing meals and sharing them with people on the streets.
In a post on his official X account on Saturday, Wahab acknowledges the charitable intention behind the gesture but stresses that such activities must comply with state regulations.
“While we appreciate the spirit of charity and compassion behind your initiative, cooking and distributing food on public roads or walkways is not permitted,” he says.
According to the commissioner, cooking or trading on public infrastructure raises safety, sanitation and traffic concerns.
He reveals that Martins had earlier received a warning over a similar activity but authorities allowed it at the time because of its humanitarian nature.
“You were previously cautioned about this issue last year due to its philanthropic intention and appeals made at the time,” Wahab says.
However, he warns that repeated violations could lead to legal action.
“I strongly advise that you desist from carrying out street cooking or similar activities in public spaces to avoid apprehension and possible prosecution,” he adds.
Wahab urges the actress to conduct charitable outreach through approved venues and established channels.
“If you wish to continue your charity work, it should be done in approved locations where vulnerable people can be supported without violating existing laws,” he says.
Authorities say the directive is part of broader efforts to maintain sanitation, public safety and traffic order in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
