LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos police take popular TikTok creator Habeeb Hamzat, known as Peller, into custody following a viral livestream that allegedly shows reckless driving and an attempted act of self-harm, triggering widespread public concern.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Lagos State Police Command confirms the arrest follows a video streamed live on Sunday in which Mr. Hamzat’s actions endanger both his life and other road users.
Authorities say the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive probe. “The outcome of the investigation will be made public, and the suspect will be charged in a court of competent jurisdiction in accordance with the law,” police say.
Reacting to the incident, Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh issues a stern warning to influencers and digital creators. “Social media platforms must not be used to promote reckless, dangerous or criminal acts,” Mr. Jimoh says. “Such lawlessness will not be tolerated.”
The case reignites debate over the responsibilities of online influencers amid growing concerns about risky stunts performed for engagement and monetisation.
Road safety advocates say the incident underscores the need for stricter enforcement and digital accountability, warning that impressionable audiences may imitate dangerous behaviour online.
