LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos authorities impound 134 commercial motorcycles during coordinated enforcement operations aimed at curbing illegal okada activities on restricted routes.
The Lagos State Taskforce says the operation unfolds in two phases, targeting traffic violations, security risks and disorder along major highways.
Director of Public Affairs for the Taskforce, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, tells reporters on Tuesday that the second phase follows an earlier morning sweep, signalling sustained enforcement.
“The operations cover strategic locations including Obalende, CMS Roundabout, Mile 2 Bridge, Ladipo Bus Stop and the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway,” Abdulraheem says.
Officials report that several riders flout traffic laws by operating on prohibited routes, obstructing vehicular movement and posing safety risks to commuters.
The Taskforce confirms that all 134 motorcycles are impounded during the exercise and says traffic flow improves across affected corridors shortly after.
Authorities reiterate that enforcement will continue until full compliance with state traffic regulations is achieved. The crackdown aligns with Lagos’ long-standing restrictions on commercial motorcycles on major highways.
Residents welcome the move, while transport unions urge the government to expand alternative transport options for displaced riders.
