LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government seals two public toilets in Surulere and Lagos Island for discharging untreated sewage into canals and public drains.
The enforcement, carried out Tuesday, is confirmed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
“The facility at Jinadu Street was sealed for discharging untreated faecal matter into the canal,” Wahab says.
Authorities also shut a second toilet at Marina Under Bridge for pumping raw sewage into public drainage systems, describing the act as a serious environmental and public health risk.
“Such actions constitute environmental nuisance and endanger public health,” the statement adds.
Officials urge residents and operators to adopt proper wastewater management practices or face sanctions and possible prosecution.
The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office intensifies enforcement across Surulere, Amuwo Odofin, Victoria Island and Lekki in response to rising violations.
The crackdown reflects growing concern over sanitation standards in densely populated urban areas.
