LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government strengthens its push for academic excellence as it partners Rotary International to boost literacy among public secondary school students through a statewide quiz competition.
The collaboration, involving the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and 12 Rotary clubs in District 9112, culminates in the 2026 Rotary Annual Inter-Secondary Schools Quiz Competition.
Representing the government, Ronke Matuluko, Deputy Director of Education, describes the initiative as vital to sharpening students’ intellectual abilities. “This competition nurtures literacy, confidence and academic discipline,” she says.
Participating schools include Oriwu Senior Model College, Gbaja Girls Senior High School, Gaskiya Senior College and Eko Akete Senior Grammar School, among others.
Rotary District Governor Lanre Adedoyin emphasises mentorship and responsibility. “Education must be treated as an article of faith because these young people are tomorrow’s leaders,” he says.
President of the Rotary Club of Gbagada South, Adeniyi Adegbite, adds that the quiz promotes teamwork, leadership and curiosity, aligning with Rotary International’s focus on basic education.
At the end of the contest, Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu, emerged winner, while Ijeshatedo Senior Grammar School and District Senior College, Meiran, placed second and third.
Education stakeholders say sustained public-private collaboration remains essential to improving outcomes in Lagos public schools.
