LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government says more than 6.47 million residents are now enrolled in its digital identity database as part of efforts to improve governance, planning and public service delivery.
Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology Tobosun Alake discloses the figures during the annual ministerial press briefing marking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s seventh year in office.
According to Alake, the database managed by the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency currently contains 6,465,667 registered residents, including 4,058,333 adults and 2,407,224 children.
“The Lagos Identity Card Project remains a critical component of the state government’s drive to enhance governance efficiency and public service delivery,” he says.
The Lagos Identity Card initiative, known as LAG ID, is designed to provide a comprehensive database for planning, policy implementation and effective resource allocation.
Alake explains that the system operates on an open framework allowing collaboration among government agencies and private sector partners while maintaining centralised data management.
The commissioner also highlights gains in digital traffic enforcement, revealing that authorities track about 86,000 traffic violations in recent months and 737,000 violations overall.
He adds that Lagos appoints 109 data protection officers to safeguard residents’ information and records approximately 250,000 monthly visits across government digital platforms.
According to Alake, the state also deploys about 3,000 kilometres of fibre duct infrastructure across areas including Alimosho, Ikorodu and Ibeju-Lekki.
The government plans to expand the network to 5,000 kilometres through partnerships with private investors as Lagos accelerates its smart city transformation agenda.
