LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Police Command has detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) following the fatal shooting of a young girl and the injury of another during a police operation in Nosamu, Ajegunle.

The incident occurred on Thursday between 9.30 p.m. and 10 p.m., according to a statement issued on Saturday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi. The deceased was identified as Omole Taiwo, while the second girl, who was also struck by a bullet, is receiving treatment and is said to be in stable condition.

Adebisi said the officer had been deployed after the police received a distress call over a violent clash between two rival groups, identified as Nosamu Boys and Alayabiagba Boys, reportedly fighting over toll collection.

According to the police spokesperson, members of the rival groups were armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons when officers arrived at the scene. “During the operation, the officer discharged his firearm, and the bullet struck the two girls,” she said. The victims were initially taken to Ajeromi General Hospital. Taiwo was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where she died.

The police said the officer had been disarmed and detained, while the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, has visited the bereaved family and assured them that the circumstances surrounding the shooting would be thoroughly investigated.
