LAGOS, Nigeria – Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command arrest a 26-year-old housewife for staging her own kidnapping and extorting ₦2.5 million from her husband, a Nigerian resident in South Africa.
The suspect, Misturah Bada, is arrested alongside her accomplice, Adedamola Daniel, following investigations that uncover a fabricated abduction scheme designed to defraud her spouse.
In a statement issued on Sunday, police say the case surfaces after the husband reports that his wife is allegedly abducted and still held captive despite the payment of ransom. Investigators reveal that the suspects initially demand ₦10 million, later reduced to ₦3 million, and receive ₦2.5 million before inconsistencies raise suspicion.
Police investigations trace ransom negotiations to a WhatsApp line linked to a SIM card recovered from Daniel during his arrest in Osun State. According to investigators, Daniel confesses to providing the SIM card and one-time password at Bada’s request, enabling her to coordinate the extortion.
Confronted with digital and physical evidence, Bada admits to faking the kidnapping. Her iPhone 12 Pro Max, earlier claimed to be with kidnappers, is recovered from a buyer who tells police he purchased the device from her for ₦380,000.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, condemns the act, warning that false kidnapping reports divert critical security resources.
“Such criminal deception wastes valuable police time and undermines public trust,” Jimoh says.
Police confirm that both suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, urging residents to report suspicious activities through official emergency lines.
