LAGOS, Nigeria – A gas explosion occurred Sunday at Orisunmibare Market in the Orile-Iganmu area of Lagos, sending traders into panic before emergency services swiftly contained the incident.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the explosion, which began around 2:13 p.m., was traced to a gas retail outlet housing multiple cylinders.
Director, Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye said firefighters from the Sari-Iganmu and Ilupeju stations arrived promptly to prevent escalation.
“Swift responses from our teams brought the situation under control, averting further damage,” she said.
She added that several shops were affected, though no lives were lost. Only one person sustained a minor hand injury.
“Operations at the market have been concluded. No fatalities were recorded,” Adeseye confirmed, adding that the agency remains vigilant to ensure public safety during emergencies.
The Lagos Fire Service has since urged traders to observe safety precautions when handling gas and combustible materials in crowded markets.
