LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government begins a 64-day rehabilitation of the Lekki–Epe Expressway on Sunday, triggering phased traffic diversions across one of the city’s busiest corridors.
Officials say the repairs cover the 20-kilometre stretch between Admiralty Circle and Jubilee Bridge, executed in eight sections to limit disruption. The project follows months of complaints over deteriorating road conditions and growing traffic bottlenecks in Lekki.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Olufemi Daramola, confirms Wednesday that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has awarded the contract, with asphalt pavement planned across both carriageways.
“After a stakeholders’ meeting, we moved to site to reassess and plan for commencement,” Daramola says. “The work will be taken section by section to ensure efficiency.”
Traffic management takes centre stage as construction begins. The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, explains that authorities will avoid a full road closure, opting instead for intersection-based construction.
“The Lagos-bound carriageway from Chevron to Igbo-Efon will be closed in segments for about 64 days,” Osiyemi says. “Traffic will be diverted to the Epe-bound side using dynamic lane sharing.”
Under the plan, two lanes serve Lagos-bound traffic during morning peak hours, while one lane handles Epe-bound vehicles. Road shoulders are graded to create additional space.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes, including the Coastal Road via Ogombo and Abraham Adesanya, as well as Orchid Road through Lafiaji and Naale Street.
The Special Adviser on Transportation, Sola Giwa, assures residents of safety and traffic control.
“Adequate signage, lighting and traffic personnel will be deployed to maintain steady flow and prevent panic,” he says.
