LAGOS, Nigeria – A Lagos-Ibadan Expressway crash has claimed the lives of seven people, while two others sustain injuries after three vehicles collide around the Kara section of the highway in Ogun State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, says the fatal accident occurs shortly after midnight on Monday and involves a HOWO CNG/CIMC ENRIC truck, a MACK trailer and a Mitsubishi Canter.
According to the FRSC, nine male victims are involved in the crash.
The agency says its Ibafo Outpost receives a distress call at 12:04 a.m. and arrives at the accident scene within five minutes.
Preliminary investigations identify speed violation as the likely cause of the collision, although further investigations continue.
The seven deceased victims are evacuated by the Ogun State Ambulance Service, while the two injured survivors are transported to hospital for treatment.
Following the rescue operation, the damaged vehicles were handed over to the Motor Traffic Division of the Nigeria Police Force in Ibafo for further investigation.
Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, sympathises with the families of the victims and wishes those injured a speedy recovery.
He urges motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, to avoid speeding, maintain safe following distances and remain alert while driving, especially at night.
“Motorists should exercise extra care at night, as reduced visibility and fatigue can increase the risk of road traffic crashes.”
He also advises road users to avoid reckless behaviour capable of endangering lives and to prioritise safety on Nigerian highways.
