LAGOS, Nigeria – A gas explosion on Saturday kills two people and destroys multiple properties along the Lekki-Epe Expressway after a collision involving a tanker and a tipper truck, authorities confirm.
The early morning incident occurred at Tera Ahmed bus stop in Sangotedo, triggering a fire that spread to nearby warehouses, shops and vehicles.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service say emergency teams quickly contain the blaze and prevent further damage.
Controller General Margaret Adeseye explains, “A speeding tipper truck rammed into a stationary gas truck, triggering the explosion.”
She confirms that three warehouses and 10 shops—including a gym—are affected, while a nearby fuel station and tanker are saved.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency attributes the incident to human error. Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu says, “Over-speeding and reckless driving caused the accident.”
Traffic officials add that the victims were trapped and burnt beyond recognition, while the tanker driver escaped unharmed.
Authorities have since evacuated the wreckage and restored normalcy.
