LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos emergency responders rescue an 84-year-old man from a deep well in a dramatic operation that averts a suspected suicide attempt in the Aboru area of the state, officials say.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) say it receives a distress call at 10:09 a.m. on Tuesday reporting that an elderly man has fallen into a covered well at No. 35A, Fadeyemi Street, Pipeline, within the Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area.
Firefighters from the Abesan Fire Station arrive at the scene within minutes and discover that the victim is trapped inside a well estimated to be about 140 feet deep.
Preliminary findings by emergency officials suggest the incident may be a suicide attempt, raising concern due to the fact that the well is reportedly secured and properly covered.
“The well was adequately protected and securely covered, which raises serious questions about how the victim accessed it,” the agency says in a statement, adding that investigations are ongoing.
Rescue officers deploy specialised equipment to retrieve the man alive, drawing relief from onlookers and residents who gather during the operation.
The victim is immediately handed over to family members for medical attention and further care.
LSFRS reiterates its commitment to rapid emergency response across Lagos and urges residents experiencing emotional distress to seek help.
“We encourage the public to report emergencies promptly and seek support when overwhelmed,” the agency adds.
Authorities say the outcome underscores the importance of timely intervention and community vigilance in preventing loss of life.
