LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos tightens enforcement on electronic waste management as the rapid expansion of off-grid renewable energy systems raises environmental concerns.
The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) on Thursday introduces stricter compliance measures targeting producers, collectors and recyclers.
“Monitoring and enforcement must be firm and consistent,” says General Manager Tunde Ajayi.
Under the new framework, organisations must provide proof of proper e-waste disposal through accredited vendors.
Collectors who fail to submit quarterly reports risk losing operational permits.
Recyclers are also required to report processing volumes regularly, while mandatory staff training is introduced to strengthen capacity.
The agency says improved data systems and collaboration with industry stakeholders will enhance oversight.
“Compliance will now be embedded in audit processes,” Ajayi adds.
Officials say the move aims to reduce environmental risks associated with the growing adoption of solar and other off-grid technologies.
