LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has launched unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to revolutionise traffic monitoring and boost public safety.
General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said on Thursday that the drones signal “a watershed moment in Lagos’ transport ecosystem,” moving from reactive to predictive traffic control.
“This underscores our administration’s commitment to leveraging technology for urban mobility and safety,” he said.
Equipped with high-definition cameras and aerial reconnaissance tools, the drones will enable LASTMA to identify traffic gridlocks and emergencies in real time. Officials say the system will enhance emergency coordination, shorten travel time, and reduce accidents.
Bakare-Oki reassured Lagosians that privacy safeguards and ethical standards would guide deployment. “This innovation reflects discipline and transparency, supporting Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda for sustainable mobility,” he stressed.
The authority pledged to keep investing in innovative tools that promote safe motoring, protect lives, and ensure effective traffic enforcement across the megacity.
