LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government on Friday intensified its clampdown on illegal structures obstructing waterways, demolishing buildings along the Ikota River corridor in Lekki, Eti-Osa Local Government.
The exercise, led by the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance Department, follows Thursday’s demolitions at the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo. Officials say the operations target buildings erected without approvals and those blocking natural water channels.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the action in a statement on X. “These buildings have significantly contributed to waterlogging and flood risks during the rainy season, and their removal is necessary to safeguard lives and properties,” Wahab said.
The crackdown comes barely a day after AHR’s report on the heavy flooding that paralysed several Lagos streets earlier this week, which officials attributed to blocked drains and illegal developments.
Authorities stressed that the Sanwo-Olu administration is committed to restoring order and protecting residents from avoidable disasters linked to unregulated construction.
Officials warned that demolition exercises will continue across the state as part of efforts to ensure compliance with drainage and planning laws.
