LAGOS, Nigeria – At least five people are killed in renewed cult violence in Ojo Local Government Area, prompting a police crackdown that leads to multiple arrests.
Residents in Ilemba-Awori and Shibiri report coordinated attacks over the weekend, with rival groups engaging in shootings, looting and violent reprisals.
An eyewitness, Ibrahim Sola, says the first killing occurred at Etegbin waterside. “The gunmen cornered him and killed him on the spot,” he recounts.
Panic spreads as sporadic gunfire forces residents indoors, while reports indicate the violence intensifies into Saturday evening.
Confirming the incident, Jimoh Moshood, Commissioner of Police in Lagos, says 18 suspects have been arrested.
He adds that the suspects will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for further investigation and prosecution.
Moshood assures residents of increased security presence to prevent further escalation and restore order in affected communities.
Authorities say operations are ongoing to dismantle criminal networks linked to cult activities in the area.
