LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos State authorities shut down the Ladipo Spare Parts Market on Sunday over persistent environmental violations, citing illegal waste dumping and unauthorised street trading along a major expressway.
The market, located along the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road on the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway, is sealed by enforcement officers during an early-morning operation.
Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab announces the closure on social media, saying traders repeatedly breach state environmental regulations.
“This morning, Lagos State government sealed Ladipo Spare Parts Market over indiscriminate refuse disposal on the highway median and illegal street trading,” Wahab states.
Officials say the infractions pose safety and environmental risks along one of Lagos’ busiest transport corridors linking the airport to the city centre.
The Ladipo market is a major hub for automobile spare parts, employing hundreds of traders and mechanics. Regulators have previously warned operators over improper waste disposal and roadside trading.
State authorities do not disclose when the market may reopen, noting that compliance with environmental standards is mandatory.
