LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos State is moving away from the traditional “collect and dump” waste system towards a circular waste management model, with plans to decommission major landfills within 18 months.
State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, inspected Olusosun and Soluos 3 dumpsites on Monday, announcing their conversion into modern Transfer Loading Stations where waste will be sorted, compacted, and redirected for recycling.
“The government is resolute in its determination to bequeath a sustainable and functional environment to Lagosians,” Wahab said. He highlighted ongoing partnerships with PSP operators and international stakeholders to improve landfill management, structured waste carting, and waste-to-resource initiatives.
New landfills have been opened in Badagry, Ikorodu, and Epe, with incentives for private operators to direct waste to these sites. “The governor has directed a meeting with PSP operators next week to firm up the transition plan,” Wahab added.
Addressing health and safety concerns, Wahab stressed proper profiling of landfill workers. “If you have no business being here, leave this place,” he warned, citing security and environmental risks.
