LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government on Thursday disclosed that about 160,000 residents are currently living with HIV, as authorities mark the 2025 World AIDS Day with expanded community-driven interventions.
The figure was announced by the CEO of the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA), Dr Folakemi Animashaun, who praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for sustaining political commitment to HIV prevention and treatment.
Animashaun said this year’s theme, “Overcoming Disruptions: Sustaining Nigeria’s HIV Response,” reflects Lagos’ experience, especially setbacks caused by the US Stop-Work Order, which disrupted community testing and psychosocial support.
She stressed the indispensability of grassroots systems.
“The strength of any health response is measured not only by what happens within clinics but also by the reach, trust and continuity of community engagement,” she said.
Despite disruptions, she commended peer educators, youth advocates, faith-based groups and CSOs for restoring statewide outreach.
Between January and September 2025, she said 147,466 people remained on treatment, while the ongoing community testing campaign screened 9,943 residents, recording a 2.0% positivity rate.
“When communities are mobilised and supported, we identify cases early, link individuals to care and strengthen prevention efforts,” she added.
Activities marking World AIDS Day include faith-based engagements, a novelty match, awareness walks, and empowerment events ahead of the 2 December Symposium, which she said demonstrates cross-sector collaboration in sustaining the HIV response.
