KWARA, Nigeria – The Kwara State Government has intensified efforts to improve maternal and child health through a two-day training on Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) for health workers in Ilorin.
Speaking on Monday at the opening session, Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Nusirat Elelu, said the initiative aims to strengthen antenatal care delivery and ensure better nutritional outcomes for expectant mothers.
She highlighted that ongoing investments in primary healthcare under the Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq administration are already showing results, including a 62% reduction in anemia among pregnant women.
Elelu encouraged nutrition focal persons and maternal and child health coordinators from all 16 LGAs to cascade the training to frontline health workers.
“Improving nutrition during pregnancy remains key to having healthier mothers and babies,” she said.
State Nutrition Officer, Gbenga Bankole, explained that MMS fills nutritional gaps and supports foetal development, while Beatrice Ali of the Federal Ministry of Health emphasised the importance of diets rich in calcium, iron, protein, and omega-3.
