KANO, Nigeria – Power outages across Northwestern Nigeria persist due to weaknesses in the national transmission network, the Kano Electricity Distribution Company warns on Thursday.
In a statement, KEDCO says electricity supply to Kano, Katsina and Jigawa depends heavily on two transmission corridors from Kaduna and Jos, leaving the region vulnerable to widespread blackouts whenever faults occur.
“There are no alternative transmission routes into the Kano Complex,” KEDCO spokesperson Sani Bala Sani explains. “Any disruption along these lines results in outages across multiple states.”
The company highlights urgent need for upgrades along the Shiroro–Mando–Kano corridor, citing poor maintenance, limited capacity and security challenges. Recent installation of Optical Ground Wire by the Transmission Company of Nigeria has also triggered repeated weekend shutdowns.
KEDCO says weak transmission undermines distribution efficiency, affecting households, businesses and industries that rely on stable electricity.
“Sustainable investment in transmission infrastructure is essential for economic growth and service reliability,” the statement reads.
The firm calls on the Federal Government and Ministry of Power to fast-track TCN upgrade projects, while noting that it is rationing available supply to protect key industrial zones.
KEDCO also acknowledges efforts by Kano, Katsina and Jigawa state governments to strengthen local power infrastructure, describing regional collaboration as critical to long-term stability.
