KANO, Nigeria – Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf has recruited 4,315 additional teachers into the state’s education workforce, raising the number of former Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) volunteers absorbed under his administration to over 19,000 within three years.
The announcement was contained in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Thursday.
At a ceremony held at Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium, Yusuf presented appointment letters to the new teachers, urging them to embrace discipline, dedication, and character-building in their service to pupils.
He explained that the new intake follows earlier recruitments of 5,500 teachers in 2023, 5,632 in 2024, and 4,000 in May 2025—all drawn from the BESDA volunteer scheme.
“These recruitments underscore our government’s unwavering commitment to rescuing and reforming Kano’s education sector,” Yusuf said.
As part of wider reforms, the governor also approved the engagement of 2,616 additional teachers, launched a ₦200 million vehicle loan scheme for education staff, and distributed 444 motorcycles and 300 computers to enhance school monitoring and evaluation.
Yusuf further directed the reopening of Shehu Minjibir Boarding Primary School with 180 pupils, the conversion of a school in Ungogo into a boarding facility, and the engagement of 17,000 watchmen to secure schools across the state.
The recruitment drive aligns with Yusuf’s 2023 declaration of a state of emergency in education.
