Health workers administering polio vaccine to children in Kano community
KANO, Nigeria – Tarauni Local Government Area says it successfully immunises 69,820 children during the April round of the polio vaccination campaign conducted across its 10 wards in Kano.
The council also confirms that more than 75,850 doses of oral polio vaccines are administered during the exercise as authorities intensify efforts to sustain progress toward eradicating polio.
The figures are disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the local government’s Information Officer, Adamu Ilyasu Hotoro.
According to the statement, Primary Healthcare Coordinator Muktar Datti Gwarzo attributes the success of the campaign to strong collaboration among health workers, parents, community leaders and stakeholders.
“The success recorded was made possible through the collaboration of health workers, stakeholders, parents and traditional leaders who supported efforts to ensure that eligible children received the vaccine,” Gwarzo says.
He urges parents to continue supporting future immunisation campaigns to protect children against preventable diseases.
“Parents should continue cooperating with health workers whenever polio immunisation exercises are conducted in their communities,” he adds.
The Chairman of Tarauni Local Government Area, Ahmed Ibrahim Muhammad Sekure, and Director of Administration and General Services, Tijjani Madaki Gulya, commend health workers for their commitment and professionalism throughout the campaign.
Health authorities say continuous immunisation remains critical to preventing fresh outbreaks and sustaining Nigeria’s progress against polio, especially in vulnerable communities with low vaccination coverage.
Nigeria was declared free of wild poliovirus in 2020, but health officials continue to battle circulating variant polio cases through routine immunisation and mass vaccination drives.
