KANO, Nigeria – Kano State emerges as the highest internally generated revenue (IGR) performer in Northern Nigeria, as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf approves the recruitment of 120 new revenue officers to strengthen tax administration.
The development follows the latest National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) report, which ranks Kano first in the North and ninth nationally, marking a dramatic rise from its previous position near the bottom of the table.
Governor Yusuf expresses satisfaction with the performance while receiving a briefing from the Executive Chairman of the Kano Internal Revenue Service (KIRS), Zaid Abubakar, during the induction of newly recruited officers at the Government House in Kano.
“Kano State is now ranked first in Northern Nigeria and ninth nationally. We were previously ranked as low as 30th,” Abubakar says.
He attributes the improvement to sustained reforms, institutional restructuring and strong political backing from the state government.
The statement on Saturday notes that the newly recruited officers—employed on a permanent and pensionable basis—are drawn from backgrounds including economics, accounting and taxation, and are expected to consolidate recent gains in revenue mobilisation.
Governor Yusuf reiterates his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption, warning that any revenue officer found guilty of misconduct will face strict sanctions.
Commissioner for Finance, Dr Ismail Aliyu Danmaya, congratulates the new officers, describing effective revenue generation as critical to Kano’s development drive.
