KANO, Nigeria – Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has announced plans to deploy surveillance drones and improve logistics support to strengthen security in border communities facing escalating bandit attacks.
The governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, said the announcement followed Yusuf’s Tuesday visit to three Joint Task Force (JTF) bases in Tsanyawa and Shanono Local Government Areas, where bandits recently carried out coordinated assaults. The visit comes after months of rising insecurity along the Kano–Katsina border.
Yusuf urged residents to assist security agencies with actionable intelligence, stressing that community cooperation remains central to ongoing operations. He also disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu responded positively to his briefing and assured federal support to curb the growing threat.
The governor directed the JTF to intensify efforts to rescue kidnapped residents from the affected communities. “Many innocent lives were taken away, and many others were sent into the bush,” he said. “By God’s grace, those kidnapped will be brought back to their families.”
During the assessment, the governor met families of abducted victims, offering condolences and reassurance that rescue operations were being strengthened. Recent incursions have led to between five and ten abductions, while one woman was reportedly killed during an attack.
