KANO, Nigeria – Kano State has achieved a historic leap in Nigeria’s 2025 Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking, rising from 35th position last year to 4th place — one of the most remarkable improvements in the country’s climate history.
The Director-General of Media and Publicity, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, announced this in a statement on Tuesday, crediting the progress to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s leadership and climate reforms.
Under Yusuf, Kano has implemented a State Climate Change Policy, renewable energy projects, afforestation programmes, erosion control, and urban greening initiatives. “This achievement validates our collective effort to build a sustainable, climate-smart Kano,” said Dr Dahiru Hashim, Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change.
At the unveiling ceremony in Abuja, Samantha Harrison, First Secretary for Climate Diplomacy at the British High Commission, presented Kano’s certificate of recognition, praising the state’s commitment to climate governance.
Governor Yusuf thanked development partners — including the Society for Planet and Prosperity, University of Bristol, and UK-FCDO’s PACE — for their support, reaffirming his resolve to “build a cleaner, greener, and more climate-resilient Kano State.”
